Artist Statement:

Watercolor Painting is both a calming and adventurous medium. It literally can soothe one’s soul. I have worked with other art medium in the past, but I particularly love the peacefulness of watercolor and the playfulness it brings about with experimentation. I often paint nature scenes to capture the intriguing beauty of our surroundings. At other times my paintings come purely from my imagination and I bring them to life with my own creative interpretation and sense of color. In addition, I paint Judaica subjects such as Tree of Life and Ketubah (Jewish marriage contract).

Silk Painting captivates as the paint moves quickly across the stretched silk. The movement is exciting and is usually controlled by gutta, a thick rubbery, glue-like substance; It is primarily used in the French Serti technique where gutta is applied to the silk to create outlines that prevent dyes from bleeding into each other.  My silk painting includes the creation of unique and colorful Judaica items such as: Tallit, Wimpl, Challah cover (swaddling cloth for baby at their Brit Milah).

Karen holds a Master’s degree in Architecture from the University of Oregon and a dual Bachelor’s degree in Design of the Environment and Urban Studies from the University of Pennsylvania. She worked in the fields of architecture, historic preservation, urban planning and affordable housing for many years while raising a family.  During those years she developed her skill with watercolor, silk painting and calligraphy.  She has been a Jewish educator and creative Art Midrash teacher for both children and adults.
